Why 0W-20 synthetic motor oil saves fuel and emissions.

0W-20 synthetic motor oil saves fuel and emissions for the environment.

With governments across the globe tightening emissions regulation motor manufacturers tell us 0W-20 synthetic motor oil saves fuel and emissions: But why is this?

The ICE is a notoriously inefficient piece of equipment with the majority of the energy generated being converted into heat or used to overcome friction. It therefore makes sense that, because fuel is used to generate this energy and produce emissions, that any means to reduce these “losses” will also be
beneficial to the environment. That’s why so many OEM’s are claiming that 0W-20 synthetic motor oil saves fuel and emissions.

0W-20 synthetic motor oil saves fuel and emissions by reducing losses.

When an engine is cold the engine oil thickens (Increases viscosity) and this requires a certain amount of energy to overcome this inertia on start-up and whilst warming up. And this is exactly where 0W-20 synthetic motor oil saves fuel and emissions. Being considerably thinner than a classic 10W-40, the engine has less drag to overcome. This means there’s more power produced by the engine available for tractive effort to propel the car. But this isn’t the only way in which 0W-20 synthetic motor oil saves fuel and emissions – Because there’s less pumping losses the vehicle is more fuel efficient (Estimated around 0.3%) which not only saves money on fuel but reduces emissions which in turn reduces emissions taxes.

Cold scuff on start-up is one of the biggest causes of premature wear in an engine. This is primarily because the thicker oil is more viscous and takes longer to reach the areas furthest away from the oil pump pickup. This means that rotating parts such as overhead camshafts don’t receive a full flow of immediately the engine starts up. By being less viscous when col 0W-20 synthetic motor oil saves fuel and emissions and reduces wear by reaching these components soon after start.

Because synthetic engine oil is more resistant to oxidation than regular mineral oil 0W-20 synthetic motor oil saves fuel and emissions by being more stable across a wide range of operating temperatures. This means fewer oil changes and better protection of the engines moving parts.

Even though 0W-20 synthetic motor oil saves fuel and emissions not all synthetic engine oils are the same, and it’s therefore important to only use a quality fully synthetic engine oil, such as that produced by Habot Synthetic Lubricants. The professionals at Habot are standing by to advise you on your requirements.
